Educators Information
Becoming a educator
Family Day Care Providers are people who enjoy interacting with children and
their families. They have knowledge about child development and early learning.
They are warm, caring, energetic and flexible and are able to develop a trusting
relationship with both children and their parents. They respect and value all
people including those with special needs or different cultural backgrounds
Educators can accept support from Family Day Care staff who visit regularly
to ensure that quality of care, health and safety standards are being met. Educators’ homes conform to health and safety standards, and legislation requires
that all adults residing in the care provider’s home are deemed “fit and
proper” persons to provide childcare.

What safety standards are needed in my home?
The Scheme has safety standards designed to protect children from harm,
eg all swimming pools must have child-proof fencing; electrical safety switch
and smoke alarms are required; an adequately fenced and shaded area must be
available for children’s play; facilities must be available to lock away poisonous
substances and hazardous equipment.
Co-ordinators have found that most family homes can be easily adapted to meet
Scheme safety standards, and they are happy to offer advice on safety solutions.
Your commitment to providing and maintaining a safe and child-friendly environment
is the key to success!
